It took me a few days and lots of head-scratching and googling to recreate the PSD in Wordpress. All those tools to sort through on the lefthand side of the screen. The biggest challenge for me though was Photoshop. My experience with PHP was limited, and although I loved Wordpress a few years ago because it offered a nice interface for non-technical people looking to make a website, looking at it now after having made some websites from scratch it all seemed so bloated with code. Luckily Adobe offers a 7 day free trial for Photoshop. I made wireframes with Balsamiq once when I consulted for a startup, but for my own apps and websites I’ve always relied on the tried and true method of pen and paper. Perhaps people just assume everyone has experience with Photoshop, like how everyone has experience with Microsoft Word and Excel. But we didn’t talk about Photoshop, which I had very little experience with. In the interview we talked about HTML, CSS, and Javascript, as well as jQuery vs React, and we talked about Wordpress and PHP, which I had a little experience with, although I’ve done more backend stuff with Ruby and Ruby on Rails. I started reading about slicing layers on Photoshop and realized I’d need Photoshop to really do anything with this PSD file. I started googling ‘convert PSD to HTML’ and ‘convert PSD to Wordpress’.

“A code challenge would be no problem,” I replied. “Given that most of our projects are going to be Wordpress builds / management - how would you feel about turning a PSD into Wordpress as a kind of homework assignment - something very simple that could be done quick?” I got a tour of their office, which seemed like an awesome workplace. I had as many questions for them as they had for me. The interview felt more like a conversation. I enjoyed talking with my interviewers about what their company offers their clients, and what challenges their engineering team is facing.
